Astros Outfielder Could Make Interesting Target for the Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies’ outfield has been an overwhelming problem this season; and it is one that could severely hinder the team in the postseason. The Phillies have three outfield options that are struggling at the plate while their only productive hitter, Nick Castellanos, has been among the worst outfield defenders in the game.

In this year’s trade market, another outfielder of interest has recently surfaced. According to MLB insider Will Kunkel, Astros’ left fielder, Chas McCormick, has been drawing interest. He doesn’t mention who has inquired, but it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume the Phillies placed a call.

Both this year and last, McCormick has been hampered by a slew of injuries, keeping him off the field. As of now, he is recovering from an oblique strain. Last year, in a shortened season, McCormick hit .211 with five home runs. However, in his last full year of 2023, McCormick posted exceptional numbers. hitting for a .273/.353/.489 slash line with 19 stolen bases. And the best part is that his defense is rated as plus at all three outfield positions. He even recorded 12 outs above average in 2021.

With their outfield already packed with decent options, the Astros can afford to jettison McCormick. As for the Phillies, there should be some concerns about his ability to stay healthy; however, McCormick would be a cheap addition with glowing upside. This kind of low-risk move might pay off huge for the Phillies as McCormick would bring with him a solid glove and, potentially, an impact bat. McCormick is owed $3.4 million this year and is under club control through 2026.
