Arizona State vs. Texas Tech: An Interesting Matchup Through the Years originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Red Raiders of Texas Tech own a 4-2 won-loss record vs. the Sun Devils of Arizona State. But an anomaly has occurred in the series.
In a story by Ethan Lee on wreckemred.com, the Red Raiders and Sun Devils have never won a road game against each other in the series, one that was first played in the 1930s in Lubbock, a loss for the Sun Devils.
Arizona State also suffered losses to Texas Tech last season and in 2017. Texas Tech lost to ASU in 2016 and 1999. The Red Raiders did win a neutral site game against the Sun Devils in the Holiday Bowl in 2013.
The 2016 matchup was a barnburner, won by the Sun Devils 66-58. Texas Tech was led by future NFL Super Bowl champion quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Arizona State was quarterbacked by Manny Wilkins. Both teams combined for 1,264 yards of total offense and 62 first downs.
Mahomes passed for 540 yards and five TDs,but threw two INTs. In addition, the Red Raiders committed nine penalties for 94 yards, which proved to be too much to overcome. Wilkins passed for 351 yards and two scores. However, he secured the football with no turnovers.
Fast forward to 2025.
The Sun Devils, conference champions in the Big 12 in 2024, welcome back 17 starters, including QB Sam Leavitt, who is a Heisman candidate for 2025 and his favorite target in receiver Jordyn Tyson. They will also enjoy the luxury of coaching continuity as the entire staff returns for another season.
Texas Tech, coached by Joey McGuire, returns 21 starters (including transfers). The Red Raiders recruited the No. 1 transfer portal class for 2025, a class that included DL Romello Height (Georgia Tech), OLB David Bailey (Stanford) and DT Skyler Gill-Howard (Northern Illinois, 2nd Team All-MAC).
Veteran Red Raiders QB Behren Morton also returns. Morton passed for 3,335 yards, 27 touchdowns and eight INTs (in 466 pass attempts). Going into his fifth season in Lubbock, Morton ranks 10th on the school’s all-time passing list.
Can the Red Raiders get off the snide and win a road game against the Sun Devils? We will find on Oct. 18 when Texas Tech travels to Tempe to face off against Arizona State at Mountain America Stadium.
