The Brooklyn Nets have taken care of most of their business this offseason as they look ahead to a 2025-26 NBA season that could be another tough one to bear. Brooklyn has one task left on their offseason to-do list and that is figuring out what they’re going to do with guard Cam Thomas. The Nets and Thomas have been taking their time with their polarizing negotiations.
“I’m weirded out by this situation, honestly. Here’s the thing… The whole ‘we are deprioritizing offense since we need like defensive versatility’ and all this. Cool. You still need to put the ball in the basket,” Mort Jensen said of Thomas during an episode of the “Hardwood Knocks” podcast. Jensen was discussing Thomas’ free-agency journey this summer with co-host Dan Favale of Bleacher Report.
“He’s the guy because if you’re going for two years and $28 million, if the Nets just won’t move off of that, that’s like why not just play out your qualifying offer,” Favale said when giving his take on the Thomas situation. This conversation between Favale and Jensen is more of an indication of how what Thomas is going through seems to be one of the more interesting developments this summer.
Thomas is one of four notable restricted free-agents that have yet to sign deals with their teams as of this writing: Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga, Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey, and Philadelphia 76ers guard Quentin Grimes. Of the four, Thomas is expected to be the player that accepts his qualifying offer ($5.99 million) heading into the 2025-26 campaign due to what he believes he deserves in free-agency.
Thomas, 23, is coming off the best season of his four-year career as he averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land. As such, Thomas came into this offseason expected to command somewhere between $20 million and $30 million per season on his next contract, but Brooklyn reportedly has balked at that. This situation could linger into September.
