Angel Reese’s Unexpected Lead Over Caitlin Clark Turns Heads originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark won the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year award, receiving 66 of the 67 possible votes. The one vote Clark did not receive went to Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese.
Averaging 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 8.4 assists after being selected No. 1 overall by Indiana, Clark had a historic first professional campaign. Reese was historic in her own way, averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds in 34 games, setting numerous records with her ability to tally double-doubles.
Reese and Clark are very different players, but the two second-year stars have been compared since college.
The contrast in play styles between Clark and Reese is significant. A 6-foot point guard, Clark has taken over 60% of her WNBA field goal attempts from 3-point range. Reese, a 6-foot-3 forward, does her damage on the glass and in the paint.
Nonetheless, fans were surprised to see that Reese actually owns a better 3-point percentage than Clark this season. While it has come on just 13 attempts, Reese has converted on 30.8% of her shots from beyond the arc. This narrowly edges out Clark’s 29.5% clip on 78 attempts.

While many have acknowledged the massive difference in volume and degree of difficulty, this stat caught the attention of WNBA fans.
“Yep Clark has a low 3pt shooting avg,” one wrote. “Ionescu is only 33% last l checked. smh.”
“Ain’t no way,” said another.
“Clark has attempted over 20x the number of 3s Reese has attempted,” one acknowledged.
“I know that [expletive] don’t say angel has a better 3pt% than CC,” another said.

It is important to mention that not only does Clark attempt way more 3-pointers than Reese, but the degree of difficulty is much higher. Per the WNBA’s official data, 49 of Clark’s 78 attempts from 3-point range this season have come from 25-29 feet. Several others have been from beyond 30 feet.
Reese has taken just four attempts from beyond 25 feet. This also doesn’t account for defensive attention beyond the arc. While few are claiming Reese’s narrow edge over Clark in 3-point percentage is indicative of anything more than early-season variance, the stat remains surprising to many.
“Ohhh that’s nastyyyyyyy,” one added. “89th????”
“what an interesting list of 3p% in the #WNBA 👀,” said another.
“This is insanity,” one said. “Keep up the hard work, Angel.”
