Alex Rodriguez Reacts to Anthony Edwards, Potential Timberwolves Historic Deal

Alex Rodriguez Reacts to Anthony Edwards, Potential Timberwolves Historic Deal originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Within just five seasons, Anthony Edwards has established himself as one of the league’s rising stars, as he’s helped push the Minnesota Timberwolves from pretenders to contenders. In the past two seasons, the team reached the Western Conference Finals and seems destined for an appearance in the NBA Finals.

It’s clear that Ant-Man is the team’s core star, and the moves made this offseason ensured that the right players would be around him. That included signing Naz Reid and Julius Randle to contract extensions, rather than trading them or letting them go as free agents.

With the roster intact, Edwards is already working to get himself ready for next season, something he previously hadn’t had a chance to do. That shows his commitment to the team, and the Timberwolves may reward him with a potential history-making deal.

With the NBA Summer League going forth in Las Vegas, Timberwolves majority co-owners Alex Rodriguez and Michael Lore spoke with ESPN about the team’s future.

Naturally, the topic of recent rumors suggesting a historic deal for Edwards arose, as speculation online suggested he could become the first NBA player to earn $1 million per game.

“Well, I think that’s a sign that the game is very healthy,” Rodriguez said, adding, “The revenues are growing. Obviously, we signed a new 11-year media deal, which is very healthy.”

A-Rod heaped praise on Edwards and how much he’s worked to get better, including an interesting reveal.

“I remember sitting at a Miami Heat game a couple of years ago for the playoffs. All Anthony Edwards talked about, he sat right next to me for two games, how much he wanted to be in the Western Conference Finals, go to the Finals, win a title,” he shared on ESPN.

According to A-Rod, Edwards is less interested in being a “social media star” and “100% committed to being a great basketball player.”

That appears to be quite the endorsement from the former New York Yankees superstar, a high-earner during his days in MLB.

While Rodriguez started with the Seattle Mariners and had a lengthy stint with the Texas Rangers, his 10-year contract with the Yankees was his biggest. According to Spotrac, the MLB superstar’s 10-year contract with the team was worth $275 million.

His Yankees’ career included winning a World Series with the team in 2009. Edwards seems committed to getting better and achieving similar success to A-Rod by bringing Minnesota its first-ever championship.

Last season, Edwards averaged 27.6 points per game along with 5.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals. He was essential in yet another playoff run, the team’s fourth during his five seasons in Minnesota.

Whether Ant-Man receives a deal that works out to $1 million per game remains to be seen, but it would certainly make headlines and spark heated debates among fans.

Now that he’s a majority owner of the team, along with Lore, they appear committed to the Timberwolves’ future success, and that seemingly includes ensuring the players receive adequate compensation for their contributions.
