AFC defensive coordinator says Matthew Stafford gets overlooked as a top QB

Matthew Stafford could go down as one of the best quarterbacks in recent memory based on his statistical accolades and recent success with the Los Angeles Rams.

And yet, he is rarely one of the first quarterbacks to be named when talking about the best of the past decade.

Even more, an AFC defensive coordinator told Sports Illustrated‘s Matt Verderame that Stafford is often “overlooked” as one of the top players at his position over the past 10 years.

“I feel like he gets overlooked as one of the better quarterbacks of the decade,” the coordinator said. “He’s as accurate as anyone, he can make all the throws and is as smart as they come.”

It’s doubtful that anyone in Los Angeles or Detroit would disagree with that statement, given Stafford’s production as an NFL quarterback. His 17-game seasonal average is 4,580 passing yards, 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, and that’s including some injury-riddled seasons.

But he has just one Super Bowl win under his belt and just two Pro Bowl appearances, which blunts his obvious success in the league. And at 37 years old, Stafford’s time in the NFL is quickly coming to an end. But we’ll see if he has at least a few more tricks of his sleeve with the Rams in the coming years.
