Aaron Rodgers calls the Green Bay Packers an 'iconic franchise' in his first day with Steelers

He didn’t mention the Green Bay Packers by name, but Aaron Rodgers referred to them a few times in his introductory press conference with the Pittsburgh Steelers at their minicamp June 10.

Rodgers signed a one-year contract with the Steelers on June 6, after playing with the New York Jets the last two seasons — with his first season cut short by a torn Achilles tendon.

When asked why the Steelers were the right fit for him, Rodgers said it started with coach Mike Tomlin, then added, “There’s a few iconic franchises in the NFL. I played for one of them for 18 years. This is another one — one of those. There’s something special about, obviously, this area. So many great quarterbacks are from Pittsburgh. I feel like Pittsburgh has been a part of my career from the beginning.”

Rodgers also referenced former Packers coach Mike McCarthy and a number of former assistant coaches — all with Pittsburgh connections.

“Playing for Mike McCarthy for 13 years,” he said. “Having Tom Clements — or Tommy Clements, depending on how old you are — as my quarterback coach forever. Dom Capers, Kevin Greene, Darren Perry, Ben McAdoo, Frank Cignetti, Luke Getsy. I don’t want to forget anybody. But a lot of Yinzers in my life.”

Here are more moments from Rodgers’ press conference, aside from the whole wedding ring thing:

On what made now the right time for Aaron Rodgers to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers

“I was dealing with a lot of things in my personal life, and some things improved a little bit where I felt like I could fully be all-in here with the guys.”

Rodgers, 41, previously told “The Pat McAfee Show” this offseason that people in his inner circle were “battling some difficult stuff.” And on the Joe Rogan podcast in late May, Rodgers referenced “people who are close to me who have cancer.”

On how Aaron Rodgers views his leadership role with the Pittsburgh Steelers

“I think I just want to be a servant leader here and pass on the knowledge that I have of 20 years, the experience and just try and fit in the with guys, get to know them, let them get to know me and just enjoy the process.

“Everything’s new. It’s like the first day of school. I don’t know a lot of guys’ names. … But I’ll get the feel of it. And I’m excited about making this home.”
