With the landmark House v. NCAA settlement finalized at last in early June, there are now strict rules on roster limits and looser rules on scholarship limits. Specifically, Notre Dame can go up to 105 on both fronts, up from the former 85 max on scholarships.
The ND roster limit will likely be slightly higher at least this season, as federal judge Claudia Wilken demanded and received a “grandfather clause” to include walk-ons already in the program as well as incoming freshman walk-ons promised a roster spot. That option is available to team across college football, not just ND.
As for scholarships, head coach Marcus Freeman has publicly stated Notre Dame will set its limit at 95 with some flexibility through other channels, like revenue-share dollars and NIL deals to provide additional financial incentives if needed in a particular year.
With all that in mind, here’s the latest look at the Irish 2025 scholarship chart, which will be updated every time there is a change to it. Those changes should be minimal — if not non-existent — until sometime during the 2025 season.
Players on this chart are defined from a class standpoint by their year of eligibility in 2025, not by their academic year in school. We’ve designated 15 of the 2024 freshmen, and a handful of upper classmen, who were able to redshirt this past season.
Players with a + have exercised their COVID exemption to play in 2025, and the two still on the 2025 Irish roster are the last ones who were offered that exemption for the 2020 season. Three incoming transfers fall into that category as well.
Players with an * have redshirted. Players with a ^ redshirted for the first time primarily because of medical reasons. #-Indicates a player who has taken a Mormon Mission. &-Indicates James Rendell’s special status as an Australian import with a second year of eligibility guaranteed for 2025 and an active petition for a third in 2026.
