TORONTO — The Red Sox have activated right-handed starting pitcher Lucas Giolito from the 15-day injured list.
The corresponding move is lefty reliever Brennan Bernardino being placed on the bereavement list.
Giolito will make his Red Sox debut at 7:07 p.m. Wednesday when Boston plays the second game of its three-game series against the Blue Jays here at Rogers Centre. The Red Sox won the series opener 10-2 Tuesday.
Giolito signed in December 2023 for two years, $38.5 million but he spent the entire 2024 season on the 60-day IL after undergoing an internal brace procedure to repair a damaged elbow he suffered during spring training. A left hamstring strain that he suffered during his first spring training start put him on the IL to begin this season.
The 30-year-old has a 4.43 ERA in 180 career outings (178). He posted a 3.47 ERA in 72 starts from 2019-21. He finished sixth in the AL Cy Young voting in 2016, seventh in 2020 and 11th in 2021.
“I signed over here with this team for a reason and I wanted to contribute the best way I know how to, which is to take the ball and be available to throw 100-plus pitches every single start,” Giolito said Tuesday. “And I haven’t been able to do that up until this point. Now I finally have the ability and been through all this rehab stuff to get to the point to be able to do that. I’m very pleased and happy to be able to actually do my job again.”
