Former New England Patriots: NFL salary was ‘not enough’ to live in Manhattan

Former New England Patriots fullback Jakob Johnson got to play right near the Big Apple last season. But actually living there? Turns out it’s tough, even on an NFL player’s dime.

This week, the German-born fullback replied to a post on social media poking fun at the unrealistic living spaces of fictional New Yorkers. It’s a frequent online joke that asks, for example, how did the characters on “Friends” afford to live in their nice apartments?

Johnson, who played for the New York Giants last season, wrote in a report that even a professional football player doesn’t necessarily make enough money to live it up in New York City.

“‘How I Met Your Mother’ was a big reason why I wanted to live in America/Manhattan,” Johnson wrote. “Turns out NFL salary is not enough.”

“How I Met Your Mother” is another sitcom with the trope of New Yorkers in apartments the characters could never realistically afford. When that show started, Ted Mosby was a flailing architect while roommate Marshall Erikson was still in lawschoo. Still, the two split a gorgeous apartment and having enough money to meet at the bar downstairs on a regular basis.

According to Over the Cap, Johnson made $338,700 last season, having spent most of the year on the practice squad before being released in November.

Johnson started his NFL career in New England as a member of the league’s International Pathways Program. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Johnson played for the Stuttgard Scorpions as well as for Tennessee before signing with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent.

According to Over the Cap, Johnson made about $1.9 million over three seasons in New England. Johnsen then spent two seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, earning about $3.38 million, per Over the Cap.
