Tyler Shough's dog, Murphy, takes NFL draft by storm after Saints select Louisville QB

Tyler Shough might now be an NFL quarterback, but the former Louisville Cardinal’s dog took Friday’s second round of the NFL draft by storm.

Shortly after Shough was taken by the New Orleans Saintswith the No. 40 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, NFL Network’s broadcast caught Shough’s dog, Murphy, jumping for pure joy on the announcement at the quarterback’s draft party with friends and family in Scottsdale, Arizona.

To quote NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, that’s a good dog.

“She was fired up for sure. She was snoozing a little bit earlier but now she is ready to go to New Orleans,” Shough told ESPN’s “College GameDay” broadcast of the NFL draft Friday about his dog.

With the selection by the Saints, Shough becomes the first Louisville quarterback to be taken in the NFL draft since Lamar Jackson went No. 32 overall to the Baltimore Ravens in 2018. In his lone season at Louisville, Shough completed 244 of 389 passes and threw for 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Shough will get a chance to immediately to start in the NFL as the Saints still don’t know the status of starting quarterback Derek Carr. As noted by USA TODAY, Carr is weighing options on how to deal with a shoulder injury after being sidelined for the final four games of the last NFL season with a fractured hand.

Murphy already had a Saints dog bandana on during the television interview. Shough explained: “We had one for every (NFL) team. We were prepared.”
