BOSTON — Triston Casas’ offensive slump to begin the 2025 season has been well documented. He’s 12-for-76 (.158 batting average) with a .229 on-base percentage, .237 slugging percentage, .466 OPS, one homer, three doubles, four RBIs and three runs in 21 games.
The 25-year-old first baseman, who began the year as the cleanup hitter and has been moved down to seventh in the batting order, also has negative-2 defensive runs saved in 174 innings at first base, per Fangraphs.
He’s in the 13th percentile in range/outs above average (-2), per Baseball Savant. He’s in the 18th percentile in run fielding value (-1).
“Inconsistent,“ manager Alex Cora said about Casas’ defense Tuesday. ”Yeah, inconsistent. There’s a few things that we’re working on with him and we believe he can be much better.”
Casas has logged 19 starts at first base and made two errors there. What areas are he and the Red Sox working on?
“The first step,” Cora said. “We were trying to work on his pre-pitch in spring training. He’s fallen into some bad habits lately. But if we can get that one down, he’ll be better. He’s making throws. He makes every throw at first base. That’s really good. But yeah, we gotta get him moving at first.”
Casas has negative-9 defensive runs saved in 1,921 career innings at first base, per Fangraphs. He had negative-1 defensive runs saved in 512 innings last year.
