A last push? Bayern Munich eyeing Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong

The summer transfer window is winding down to a close and clubs across Europe are prepping to make their final, last dash moves before everything needs to be set in stone. Bayern Munich have been put through quite the ringer for a number of their transfer prospects this season and are doing their best to try to figure out what to do in the final stages before the window closes. Liverpool beat them to Florian Wirtz, Nick Woltemade wound up joining Newcastle United from VfB Stuttgart, and the Nicolas Jackson loan deal from Chelsea has been hanging in the balance due to Liam Delap’s injury sustained in Chelsea’s win over Fulham over the weekend.

Per information from The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern is pondering the idea of a potential move for Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong in what would be a loan deal with an option to buy at the end of said loan. Despite Bayern’s interest, the reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions have been adamant that the defender is not for sale this summer for any price even though they have not lost any defenders during this summer’s transfer window thus far, not counting Noni Madueke, who has been utilized as a wing back, who joined Arsenal this summer.

The 19-year old has a contract with the Blues that runs through June 2029 and made his breakthrough into the first team last winter under Enzo Maresca, making the majority of his starts and appearances in Chelsea’s Europa Conference League run up through winning the competition. He also started Chelsea’s Premier League season opener against Crystal Palace this season. In the subsequent two matches against West Ham United and then Fulham, Malo Gusto replaced Acheampong in the starting lineup and the youngster was an unused sub on the bench.

For the player himself, the outlook of minutes at Bayern might not really be any higher than it currently is at Chelsea, but Vincent Kompany would certainly welcome the added depth with the amount of defensive injuries he had to deal with last season. The Belgian manager has been criticized for his lack of reliance on younger players, but that trend could change this season, as he has already showed faith in promising young attackers Lennart Karl and Jonah Kusi-Asare.
