Week 3 Diamond Top Performers: Herendeen fans 15, Camden-Frontier sweeps North Adams

HILLSDALE COUNTY — Pitching success was once-again a key player in leading to multiple wins across the board in local area baseball and softball matches.

After an impressive first week for the Jonesville baseball team, junior Devan Herendeen was back at it again on the mound Thursday night against Brooklyn Columbia Central in a 5-3 victory. It was a bounce-back win after the Comets got shut out 8-0 in game one. The win saw Herendeen strike out 15 batters over three innings while giving up three hits, three runs and one earned run.

Herendeen also had a double, along with a run to help the scoring effort. Jonesville also got the first home run for local baseball teams thanks to a solo shot from first baseman Kyle Shannon.

This week’s winners

Camden-Frontier sweeps North Adams-Jerome

The Camden-Frontier varsity RedHawk baseball and softball teams got two major SCAA rivalry wins against North Adams-Jerome. However, both teams would face strong competition from aces in the opposing bullpens.

  • Baseball: Camden-Frontier 10, North Adams-Jerome 2
    • Sophomore Jayden Martinez struck out 11 of the 26 batters he faced in a complete seven-inning game. He allowed just three hits and two runs, zero earned. Martinez also had three hits and two RBIs.
    • RedHawk baseball running was a real headline grabber from this game. Tyler Friskney stole six bases as a pinch runner. Kaiden Conroy had four stolen bases along with a hit, RBI and three runs of his own.
    • It wasn’t a lively day at-bat for the Rams, but ace senior pitcher Connor McKay struck out nine over five innings, allowing five hits and seven runs, three earned.
  • Softball – Camden-Frontier 10, North Adams-Jerome 7
    • The RedHawks were able to hold off a late comeback against North Adams-Jerome on their home field thanks to a combined pitching effort from Heidi Gawronski and Elexis Landwehr.
    • Gawronski pitched four innings, striking out two and giving up two hits and four runs, three earned. Landwehr pitched the final three innings, holing off the Rams comeback. Landwehr struck out three whilst giving up two hits and three earned runs.
    • The big lead was largely thanks to a massive grand slam in the bottom of the third inning from Harlee Groves. Groves led the team with two hits, four RBIs and one run scored.
    • Regan Schaedler had three hits, two RBIs and one run. Sutton Cooney had three hits and two runs.
    • For the Rams, Marissa Todd had a solid effort in the circle striking out six over six innings, but the Rams would give up 10 hits and nine earned runs. It wasn’t a particularly big game at the plate for the Rams but Maddie Horn and Julyann Trumble made their way around the bases for two scores each thanks to three steals for Maddie and two for Julyann. Blyzzerd Nelson also scored a run with two steals.

Camden-Frontier sophomore Elexis Landwehr helped the RedHawks hold off a comeback from the Rams. She also had a three hit, six RBI and two run-game against Colon that included a home run.

Baseball – Litchfield 12, Waldron 5

The Litchfield baseball team combined to score 35 runs against their opponents heading into the weekend with tournament games still ahead on Saturday. The games were against Tekonsha and Waldron.

  • Hunter Snyder pitched three innings for Litchfield, striking out eight and fiving up three earned runs on four hits. Snyder drove in three runs on two hits, including a double, and scored twice.
  • Wesley Wilson pitched the final four innings, striking out 10 batters and allowing zero hits, zero walks and zero runs, earning the win. Wilson had two hits, a double, three RBIs and two runs.
  • Litchfield 25, Tekonsha 10
    • A combined team effort at the plate was led by five runs and two hits from Wilson. Connor Kerr earned the win with seven strikeouts in the final 2 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs and three hits. Kerr also had one hit, two RBIs and three runs.
    • Caleb Bills had two hits, a double, two RBIs and three runs. Brady Kerr and Brayden Bradley also scored three runs..
    • For the Spartans, brothers Alec and Troy Shamplo shared pitching duties, with Alec striking out two batters in four innings (allowing six hits, seven runs, four earned). Troy pitched the final two innings with four strikeouts, eight hits and five earned runs on the stat sheet. The brothers combined to score three of the five runs. Troy had two hits, one RBI and two runs. Alec had one hit, one RBI and a run.

Softball – Hillsdale 14, Concord 7

The Hillsdale varsity softball team went 1-3 in their Week 3 matchups, but they earned a win in the final game of the week.

  • It wasn’t a flashy start, but Sierra Kibert helped earn the win for the Hornets with four innings pitched, striking out six batters whilst giving up three hits and seven runs, four earned. Kibert also had one hit, one RBI and two runs. It was a good bounce back performance after the Hornet lost in the circle against Hudson (15-4) earlier in the week.
  • Krystin Mapes led the team with three RBIs on a double-base hit. Mapes would add one run. Shyanne Ellsworth had two hits, including a double, two RBIs and a run.

Hillsdale senior Shyanne Ellsworth (13) had a big week for the Hillsdale softball team, helping them defeat Concord.

Other notable highlights

  • Camden-Frontier softball pitcher Elexis Landwehr didn’t have a strong pitching effort against Colon earlier in the week (six strikeouts in a 22-4 loss), but the RedHawk made a strong impact in the second game despite the loss 29-15. The sophomore had two doubles and a big home run, driving in a total of six RBIs and scoring two runs of her own.

  • Hillsdale senior softball player Shyanne Ellsworth had three RBIs, a double, a triple and a run scored in three other games this week. No other Hornet softball player had as productive of a week other than Kherington Ladd, who added an additional 26 strikeouts to her season total, but the freshman pitcher also picked up two losses in the first game against Concord (8-1) and in game one against Hudson earlier in the week (19-2).
