Olympique de Marseille’s priority this summer was to strengthen the defence, and despite the arrival of Facundo Medina (currently injured) on loan from RC Lens and the arrival of CJ Egan-Riley on a free transfer from Burnley, an experienced centre-back is still in demand.

Last season, Marseille’s defensive struggles were notable, conceding 47 goals in 34 games, and in the first two games of the new season, there is a sense that those same issues are once again emerging.

According to information from Foot Mercato, Olympique de Marseille have reignited their interest in West Ham United centre-back Nayef Aguerd (29), whom they made an initial approach for in June. However, several clubs are said to be interested, with Sunderland AFC, one of the more notable candidates

Aguerd spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad, but looks to have found a more consistent role at West Ham this year under Graham Potter. The Moroccan international has started in all three of the Premier League side’s losses (two in the league and the latest a defeat in the League Cup to Wolverhampton Wanderers).
