Steelers 53-man roster: 4 big takeaways from Steelers roster cuts

Now that the dust has settled on the Pittsburgh Steelersinitial 53-man roster, the team is sure to make some tweaks, some of which are already happening. But just based on what we know now, here are our four biggest takeaways from the Steelers initial roster cuts and current 53-man roster.

Pittsburgh is happy with its wide receiver group

If the Steelers had felt any pressure to add a wide receiver, there were plenty of opportunities to do so. Instead, the team stood pat and looks to be going into the season with DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, Scotty Miller, and Ben Skowronek.

Quarterback decision coming soon

It’s already being reported that the Steleers plan to put rookie quarterback Will Howard on short-term IR, but when we say a decision is coming, it has to do with what happens when Howard comes off. Will he simply supplant Skylar Thompson or could the Steelers try to tuck Howard away on the practice squad?

Defensive line prepping for a Derrick Harmon absence

Keeping eight defensive linemen tells us the Steelers are planning to be without rookie Derrick Harmon for several weeks. The Steelers were never going to put Harmon on IR because of Howard and cornerback Cory Trice Jr. but Harmon could still miss the first two games of the season or more.

Rookie linebackers win roster spots

We love seeing Jack Sawyer and Carson Bruener both making the 53-man roster. Sawyer was a given despite a poor showing in the preseason, but Bruener flat-outplayed Mark Robinson and earned a spot when many assumed he had no chance.
