ANN ARBOR, Mich. — While Michigan football fans will still see a familiar face returning punts in Semaj Morgan — who’s been doing it since late in his freshman season — there will be a new freshman in the backfield returning kicks on special teams.
Highly thought of as an electric athlete, wide receiver Andrew Marsh was mentioned by head coach Sherrone Moore on Monday as being the Wolverines‘ starting kick returner. And on Wednesday, his position coach, J.B. Brown, shared where Marsh has excelled.
“We just continue to run reps and practice and team reps, and he’s done a great job of securing the ball,” Brown said. “Done a great job of catching the ball. I’m super excited to see how explosive he is, though, in a game setting.”
Though Morgan hasn’t had the same electrifying return as he had against Iowa in the 2023 Big Ten Championship Game, with Marsh returning kicks, the hope is that his explosiveness will be on full display.
That had been the norm for years, as A.J. Henning had some huge returns, as did Giles Jackson before him. Now with Marsh, as well as Micah Ka’apana and Joe Taylor, Brown says he feels like there’s a lot to like about the kick return unit.
“Yeah, he’s done a good job,” Brown said. “And then, obviously, Ka’apana’s done a great job. Joe (Taylor)’s been back there as well. He’s done an amazing job back there. So I’m excited for whoever goes back, to be honest.”
Fans will get to see the new-look special teams in action on Saturday, when the Wolverines host New Mexico for the season opener at The Big House. The game will kick off at 7:36 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast on NBC.
