One of the stranger suspensions you’ll hear of on the high school sports level was reported out of the Grand Canyon State last week.

According to the Arizona Republic, North(Ariz.) head coach Mark Mejia has been suspended by the school for failing to report an automobile accident that happened this past summer.

The North head coach was transporting players to the Just Chilly’s Flight Club passing tournament when their minibus rear-ended a vehicle that was also traveling to the 7-on-7 event.

Neither party contacted local authorities due to the crash not involving any injuries. Due to Mejia not immediately reporting the accident, the school suspended him for five years. His suspension was brought down to two years instead after appealing to the Phoenix Union High School District Governing Board.

“They were going to the same tournament, and they said, ‘Hey, let’s just get to the tournament and we’ll exchange information,’“ Mejia told the Arizona Republic. “They got there. It’s a Saturday. The parents said, ‘Hey, the kids are fine. Let’s just play football.’ We played. We’ll take care of this on Monday.”

North finished last season 3-7 in Arizona’s Class 5A Metro classification after posting a 5-5 record in 2023. The Mustangs kick off their 2025 season this week on the road against Paradise Valley.

The Mustangs will reportedly turn to head baseball coach AJ Liebau to lead the football program during Mejia’s suspension.
