Arizona Cardinals land former first-round receiver in proposed trade

The NFL roster cutdown date is Tuesday, and there have been a number of trades around the league already. Could the Arizona Cardinals be involved in one?

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell proposed a trade that involves the Cardinals landing a talented but thus far disappointing wide receiver in a three-team deal.

What is the trade?

The Cardinals send a fifth-round pick to the Los Angeles Chargers and the Cardinals receive receiver Quentin Johnston. Connected to the deal is the Chargers sending a seventh-round pick to the New York Giants for tackle Evan Neal.

I have a couple of things to say about this.

First, why in the world is it framed as a three-team trade? This is just two Chargers trades. They send a seventh to the Giants for Neal. They send Johnston to the Cardinals for a fifth.

Now, as for the possibility of landing Johnston, a player who does have a problem with dropping the ball, this is a mixed bag.

In Arizona, Johnston would have an opportunity to compete with Greg Dortch and work out of the slot more often than he would in Los Angeles, where Allen and Ladd McConkey would be prioritized. Johnston has signed for the next two years at a total of $4.2 million, which is perfectly reasonable for a third/fourth wideout.

Now, if you haven’t watched the Cardinals since late last season, it is important to note that Dortch is not the team’s primary slot receiver anymore. They shifted from him in the second half of last season. Dortch is firmly WR4 now.

Michael Wilson plays in the slot a lot now and Zay Jones is the third receiver. Jones only had eight receptions last season, but impressed this offseason.

Do the Cardinals really need a new receiver? It couldn’t hurt, but Johnston would need to learn in a hurry to contribute. His price tag isn’t too expensive and he does have upside.

Don’t expect it, though. The Cardinals had many opportunities in the offseason and opted to bring back Jones.
