The Denver Broncos have waived cornerback Damarri Mathis, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.
Mathis (5-11, 195 pounds) was picked by the Broncos in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft out of Pittsburgh. He dressed for 16 games as a rookie, earning 11 starts. Mathis totaled 65 tackles and broke up seven passes in his first season, but he lost the starting job the following year.
Mathis appeared in all 17 games in 2023 and started six games, totaling 35 tackles and one pass breakup. Last season, he dressed for 10 games (one start) and had three tackles and one pass breakup. Over the last three seasons, his snap totals on defense dropped from 795 to 438 to 80.
The Broncos are crowded at cornerback with Pat Surtain, Riley Moss, Ja’Quan McMillian, first-round draft pick Jahdae Barron and second-year defensive back Kris Abrams-Draine, so it’s not a surprise to see them part ways with Mathis.
