Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin isn’t one to stray from tradition. He’s an old-school coach and likes things done a certain way without deviating from that path. But this preseason, Tomlin made a huge change to his philosophy that took everyone by surprise. Tomlin chose, in three preseason games, not to play starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers for a single snap. Even late in his career, Ben Roethlisberger still played a few series with Tomlin as the head coach, so in many minds it didn’t make sense why Tomlin would do something so out of character and unique. Then we realized, which, this might be unique for Tomlin, it isn’t that out of bounds for the rest of the NFL.
In fact, including the Steelers, nine teams didn’t play their starting quarterback at all in the preseason. Here’s the full rundown of the teams:
Jalen Hurts – Philadelphia EaglesLamar Jackson – Baltimore RavensAaron Rodgers – Pittsburgh SteelersJosh Allen – Buffalo BillsJared Goff – Los Angeles RamsDak Prescott – Dallas CowboysBaker Mayfield – Tampa Bay BuccaneersMichael Penix – Atlanta FalconsMatthew Stafford – Detroit Lions
It remains to be seen if Rodgers or any of these quarterbacks is better for sitting out all of the preseason. For Rodgers, the main issue centers on his lack of playing time with this team and in this system. Most of the quarterbacks on this list have been with their teams for a long time and know the offense inside and out and have established relationships with the other offensive players. Rodgers can in no way make this claim.
