The Pittsburgh Steelers will finalize their 53-man roster on August 26 — with several roster cuts to make before the important date.
With key roster decisions still ahead, Pittsburgh could kill two birds with one stone by trading away some talented depth players who could make a splash elsewhere — such as these three Steelers:
QB Skylar Thompson
The best ability is availability — right? Skylar Thompson stepped up admirably in rookie QB Will Howard’s absence following his broken finger, but even three consecutive strong performances this preseason may not be enough to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. If placing Howard on IR for the season is out of the question, why not trade Thompson for a Day 3 pick?
Possible trade value: sixth- to seventh-round draft pick
Possible landing spots: Las Vegas Raiders, Indianapolis Colts
LB Cole Holcomb
Holcomb’s preseason resurgence was nothing short of spectacular — showcasing he still has what it takes to be an elite starter in the NFL. Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson, however, are equally talented and may get the starting nod over Holcomb. With the solid depth options of Malik Harrison and Mark Robinson’s impact on special teams, Holcomb could be the odd man out in Pittsburgh — leaving the Steelers to get the most value they can out of the talented linebacker.
Possible trade value: fourth- to fifth-round draft pick
Possible landing spots: Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Chargers
CB Beanie Bishop
Despite a strong rookie season in 2024, the fan-favorite Bishop appears to be on the outside looking in just days away from the final roster cuts. Rumors began to swirl after DC Teryl Austin declared the preseason finale would be an important game for Bishop, but he didn’t play a snap — leading many to believe his Steelers days were numbered until he was confirmed injured. HC Mike Tomlin didn’t specify what the injury was but confirmed he was only considered “day-to-day.” If he overcomes this mystery injury over the next few days, a trade wouldn’t be the most surprising move in the world.
Possible trade value: fifth- to sixth-round draft pick
Possible landing spots: Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins
