The Chicago Bulls have announced that they will retire Derrick Rose’s No. 1 jersey midway through the upcoming NBA season. Given all the injuries he dealt with for the majority of his career, it is easy to forget or not know how much of a force he was in his early days.
Rose came into the league as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 draft and was one of the most, if not the most, athletically gifted point guards in basketball history. His explosiveness helped him win the Rookie of the Year award, and just two years later, he was named the regular season MVP with averages of 25.0 points and 7.7 assists a game as he helped the Bulls finish with the league’s best record.
LeBron James gave Rose some love on social media when it was announced that Rose’s jersey would be retired by the organization.

James’ Miami Heat took on Rose’s Bulls in the 2011 Eastern Conference finals and won in five games. Four years later, James faced Rose again, this time as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the playoffs, with Cleveland advancing in six games.
The two would be teammates for a brief period of time during the 2017-18 season. Rose would then be traded midway through that campaign to the Utah Jazz, who waived him, allowing him to spend the rest of the year with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
His final appearance in the NBA came during the 2023-24 season with the Memphis Grizzlies. He retired with career averages of 17.4 points and 5.2 assists a game, and he ended his time in the league with three All-Star game selections.
