Spencer, Lowry lead CJ to Horton Smith win

Carl Junction golfers Jack Spencer and Logan Lowry finished first and second to lead the Bulldogs to the team title at the 14-team Horton Smith Invitational Tuesday at Schifferdecker Golf Course.

Spencer paced Carl Junction with a 2-under 69 to win the individual title by seven strokes.

He logged six birdies and four bogeys to win the title. Lowry finished second with a 5-over 76. He managed three birdies, four bogeys and fell victim to two double bogeys.

Carl Junction claimed the team title with a 25-over 309. Along with Spencer’s top finish and Lowry at runner-up, Brock Spencer shot an 8-over 79 for seventh place in the field of 69 golfers, and Cohen Elick finished in a three-way tie for 20th with a 14-over 85.

Nevada was runner up with a team total 35-over 319, Neosho was third with a 41-over 325, and Joplin finished fourth with a 62-over 346.

Neosho’s Conner Reibolt finished tied for third with Nevada’s duo of Carter Merrick and Peyton Wyant and paced Neosho with a 6-over 77. Colby Shadwick, sixth place, was one stroke back of his teammate with a 78, and Camp Ramsey and Jaxon Ertel finished tied for 20th with a 14-over 85.

Other top 10 finishers included Nevada’s Preston Drake, who finished tied with Brock Spencer for seventh with a 79, Nevada’s Wyatt Jenkins, who shot an 80 for ninth place, and Carthage’s Micah Brust, who earned 10th place with a 10-over 81.

Joplin’s Jordan Bozarth and Taylor McMillan tied for 22nd place, each shooting a 15-over 86. Teammates Toby Ipsen and Grey Edwards were one stroke back of their teammates, each shooting 87.

In other team results, Carthage was fifth with a 67-over 351. In addition to Brust’s top 10 finish, Luke Lewis shot 87, Jack Carlton 90 and Cael Perry 93.

New Heights finished sixth with a 69-over 353. They were led by Corbin Cronenwett’s 82 and an 83 from Logan Decker. Gavin Doll and Hudson Clevenger both finished at 94.

Jackson Lucas led Webb City to a seventh-place finish after shooting a 14-over 85. The Cardinals finished 71-over at 355. Ethan Goosetree shot 88, Trenton Lynch 90 and Derrick Wagner 92 to round out the Webb City scores.

Other top 10 local team finishes included Seneca, which finished ninth with a 406. They were led by Dane Fossard’s 91. Diego Amaya shot 96, Paxton Burtrum 101, and Barrett Ginger 106. They finished 40 strokes back of eighth-place Mount Vernon (366).

McAuley rounded out the top 10 teams with a 414. Collin Schmitt shot 100, Rylan Childers 101, Jadyn LaFerla 106 and Lucas Nangle 107.

The top 10 individual golfers and top two teams qualified for an invitation to this summer’s Horton Smith Cup.
