After being drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round of April’s NFL draft, quarterback Shedeur Sanders wanted to improve his game before inviting his dad to watch him play.

Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders, better known as Coach Prime, sat down with Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin on July 28 to discuss why he didn’t attend any of the Browns’ offseason workouts.

“I’m not where I want to be, let me get where I need to be”

Coach Prime was away from Boulder for several months due to a battle with bladder cancer that he revealed during a press conference in late July. During his recovery, he visited son Shilo Sanders, a safety for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

However, he did not visit Shedeur Sanders with the Browns. “Shedeur told me not to come,” Coach Prime said.

“He’s like, ‘Dad, I’m getting three to four reps at practice. I don’t want you to see it. I’m not where I want to be, let me get where I need to be.’”

About a week after Shedeur Sanders’ message, former NFL wide receiver and Delaware State head coach DeSean Jackson reacted to his statement.

“Respect young homie 🫡,” he wrote on his Instagram story.

Jackson Paid Deion Sanders a Visit

Jackson, a three-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion, admired Coach Prime since he was a child. Jackson visited Sanders and his eldest son, Deion Sanders Jr., as documented in a Well Off Media interview.

“Man, I met Coach Prime,” he said. “I want to say early in my career. He was doing the NFL Network stuff, and I can’t remember exactly how and where it was, but it was nothing but respect.”

“Growing up, I looked up to Prime, jewelry, money, fashion [and] everything.”

Jackson is in his first season as head coach at Delaware State. Coach Prime’s example is sure to guide the former receiver once again as he makes the transition from player to coach.
