Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric is set to become a minority stakeholder in Championship club Swansea City.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 39-year-old is close to joining the Swans’ ownership group, led by chairman Andy Coleman.

The group, which includes investors Brett Cravatt, Nigel Morris and Jason Cohen, assumed majority control in December 2023 after injecting over £20 million into the club.

Modric is still playing at the highest level and has plans to keep going. However, the Croatian national team captain is reportedly planning for life after football.

Modric still wants to captain Croatia at the 2026 World Cup before retiring.

The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner is expected to sign a new 12-month rolling deal with Los Blancos, extending his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu into a 14th season. He remains a key player, with 48 appearances already this campaign.

While the financial details of Modric’s investment remain undisclosed, WalesOnline reports that an official announcement from Swansea could arrive within hours.

Swansea currently sit in 12th place on the Championship table. Under interim manager Alan Sheehan, the Welsh side has enjoyed a resurgence in form.

They were in danger of Championship relegation earlier this season but have surged away from the drop zone thanks to a good run of form

They recorded a third straight win on Saturday, securing a 1-0 victory at Sunderland.

Interestingly, Modric faced Swansea twice in the Premier League during his Tottenham Hotspur. days.

Modric’s unexpected move mirrors teammate Kylian Mbappe, who bought an 80% stake in Ligue 2 side Caen last year. Several players have taken to purchasing football clubs.

Inter Miami is famously co-owned by David Beckham, while Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has a minority stake in Phoenix Rising. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thierry Henry, Paolo Maldini, N’Golo Kante, and Ronaldo De Lima all have stakes in clubs.
