Did Amari Cooper retire? Explaining news about free agent former Cowboys, Raiders star

There are a number of veterans still out there in free agency, either waiting for a good opportunity or simply not getting a lot of sniffs in their advanced age.

One of the best: Amari Cooper.

Cooper is a five-time Pro Bowler.

He came into the league as the No. 4 overall pick in 2015 out of Alabama, and he immediately shone brightly for the Raiders.

Cooper spent four seasons with Oakland, then was traded to the Cowboys, where he starred for four more seasons.

Since then, Cooper spent three seasons in Cleveland (including two 1,000-yard campaigns there, too).

He was traded midway through the 2024 season to the Bills.

Cooper played eight games for Buffalo and caught 20 passes for 297 yards and two TDs.

Now, Cooper is a free agent, and rumors have circulated that he’s retiring.

Did Amari Cooper retire?

No, Amari Cooper has not retired.

The rumor began thanks to an X post from a parody account, Adam Schelfer (meant to imitate ESPN’s Adam Schefter).

That post came out at 10:47 a.m. on Friday. After less than four hours, it had been viewed more than 250,000 times.

The post’s circulation was helped when ESPN’s Cowboys reporter, Todd Archer, retweeted it.

But it isn’t real news. Cooper is still a free agent, still looking for a chance to keep playing. A team could probably still use the precise route runner who is one of the best contested-catch players in the NFL, even now.
