Sooners RB Jaydn Ott reveals why he chose Oklahoma over Georgia

The Oklahoma Sooners acquired plenty of new players this offseason, who they hope can make an impact during the 2025 season. One of the biggest additions was that of former Cal running back Jaydn Ott, who was the jewel of OU’s spring transfer portal haul.

Ott was a breakout star for Cal during the 2023 season, but dealt with injuries in 2024. Still, Jim Nagy, Brent Venables, and Ben Arbuckle clearly liked what they saw on tape from Ott. They hope he’ll be Oklahoma’s lead back this year in what should be a deep and talented running back room.

Ott spoke to the media for the first time on Wednesday, the same day the Sooners began fall camp. According to George Stoia, who covers OU for SoonerScoop, Ott had one primary reason for wanting to play for Oklahoma.

Ott revealed that he was choosing between the Sooners and the Georgia Bulldogs. He ultimately landed at Oklahoma because he wanted to play with fellow portal acquisition John Mateer.

That is a great sign for the Sooners. One of the many jobs a QB has once choosing a school is helping recruit other players to join him, especially on offense. Mateer was key in getting four-star quarterback Bowe Bentley to commit to Oklahoma last month, and it looks like his presence in the Sooner offense helped them get a running back with electrifying potential.

OU’s new QB-RB duo should be a big improvement over what was in place in Norman a year ago. Both players have had proven success and are a big play waiting to happen. As backfields go, the Sooners have a pretty good one heading into 2025.
