The Chicago Cubs announced Monday afternoon that they agreed to a multi-year contract extension with President of Baseball Operations, Jed Hoyer. The Cubs struck the deal just days before the 2025 MLB trade deadline.
“Jed and his baseball operations staff have built a healthy player development organization and put an exciting, playoff contending team on the field,” Cubs executive chairman Tom Ricketts said. “We are looking forward to the rest of the season and to working with Jed for years to come.”
Hoyer’s contract was set to expire at the end of the season before he agreed to the new deal Monday. The Cubs’ president of baseball operations has been in MLB since 2002, when he started with the Boston Red Sox as an assistant to the general manager.

In 2009, Hoyer was hired as the general manager of the San Diego Padres. Two years later, he joined the Cubs in the same role. Hoyer took over as the Cubs’ president of baseball operations in 2020 after Theo Epstein stepped down.
“I’m so grateful for the Ricketts family’s trust and support for 14 years,” Hoyer said in a statement. “The Cubs are a special organization with an amazing fan base. I’m excited to keep building the momentum we have and to work with a terrific baseball operations staff to consistently deliver a championship-caliber team for this great city.”
During his tenure as president of baseball operations, Hoyer has traded for Cubs’ star outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, who’s breaking out in 2025, and first baseman Michael Busch. Hoyer also signed outfielder Seiya Suzuki and shortstop Dansby Swanson, and drafted now-rookie pitcher Cade Horton and young third baseman Matt Shaw.
Hoyer also traded for star outfielder Kyle Tucker this offseason. The trade deadline is a few days away, and now Hoyer has security for multiple years within the Cubs’ organization. Chicago is expected to be busy at the deadline to acquire the talent needed for a World Series run.
