As the Jacksonville Jaguars remain fluid with Travis Hunter’s practice schedule, an important date is approaching when it comes to determining what the next steps are.
For the first time during training camp, Hunter is going to play on both offense and defense during the same practice in the Jaguars‘ offense vs. defense scrimmage on Friday, according to ESPN’s Michael DiRocco. How things unfold will play an important role in determining what Hunter’s practice schedule looks like moving forward.
“I think what will happen is where he’s on offense (on Monday), he’ll go back to defense before our mock game, scrimmage (on Friday) and we’ll be able to use that mock as an evaluation to see what do we need to do now,” Liam Coen said after Monday’s practice. “What did it look like in the scrimmage? Do we need to get him more on defense or hey, these other guys are producing and developing and we can keep with the schedule as is. It’ll be not a defining moment but an evaluation time for us.”
Through five training camp practices up to this point, Hunter has played the first two on offense, the next two on defense, and the most recent day was back on offense. Snap count-wise during these practices, Hunter’s reps on offense and defense have been almost equal.
Dating back to OTAs and minicamp, Hunter has had more practices at wide receiver, with Coen telling The Athletic recently that wideout is where more refinement was needed, given the technique and nuance that goes into playing that position.
As offensive coordinator Grant Udinski highlighted, he is very pleased with the continued progression of Hunter at wideout.
Throughout this entire process, the Jaguars have had a very detailed schedule in place for Hunter, but have also been quick to adjust as needed. Friday’s scrimmage will play a key role in determining what’s next for Hunter in that regard.
Coen added that the injury to Montaric Brown at cornerback won’t impact the team’s plans with Hunter.
