Minkah Fitzpatrick on trade: 'My silence was not a reflection of how I felt'

In the month since the Miami Dolphins re-acquired safety Minkah Fitzpatrick in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the five-time Pro Bowler hasn’t posted a thing on social media. While he was scheduled to speak to the media last week at the start of training camp, that press conference was delayed and then delayed again.

Naturally, all that silence had many curious how Fitzpatrick felt about being back on the team that traded him away during the 2019 season. On Monday, a day after reworking his contract with the Dolphins, the safety set the record straight.

“I’m not a big social media guy — you’re not going to see me on there, period, point blank,” Fitzpatrick told reporters Monday, via David Furones of the Sun Sentinel. “In no way, shape, or form was that [silence] an expression of frustration about coming back to Miami.

“I’m extremely, extremely excited to be a Miami Dolphin. Again, my silence was not a reflection of how I felt about this team and this organization. I’ve been here in the building for about a week now and I’m extremely excited about this season.”

Fitzpatrick, 28, was taken by the Dolphins in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft, but requested a trade from the team just one week into his second season in Miami. At the time, the safety was frustrated by his role in the Dolphins defense and didn’t mind sharing those complaints with the media.

Six years later, Fitzpatrick took some responsibility for the turbulent relationship with the Dolphins.

Now he’s back in Miami and isn’t planning on leaving any time soon.

“It was reported that I wanted a new contract, but I just wanted to know that I was going to be here for more than a season,” Fitzpatrick said. “I got that. Now I’m going to go out there and play at an All-Pro, Pro Bowl level and hopefully earn the respect of my teammates and the organization to have that long-term contract.”

Fitzpatrick is under contract for both the 2025 and 2026 seasons with the Dolphins.
