Cowboys’ Brevyn Spann-Ford Reveals How He’s Improved His Tight End ‘Toolbox’ originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Dallas Cowboys’ tight end room is an interesting watch as training camp continues in Oxnard, with Brian Schottenheimer potentially having three viable weapons to choose from.
Jake Ferguson is the leader of the room, with Luke Schoonmaker having to prove his worth at training camp (which he is, according to Schotty), but it is other tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford who has been making everyone take notice.
Not the strongest pass-catcher, more so a blocking tight end, the change in Spann-Ford’s receiving ability in Oxnard has been noticeable.
And as it turns out, he’s been working on it all offseason.
“I came from a primarily run offense in college, so I feel like I kind of came in with a little bit of a head start on my in terms of run scheme and things like that,” Spann-Ford said. “But it was really just growing my toolbox in the receiver game. Releases, break points, using my hands, using my body to get open. Then also just catching the football period. Just continuing to work on that every day.”
Having already gotten a taste of real NFL snaps last season when Ferguson was out with injury, Spann-Ford will now look to build on that in 2025and become a viable part of not only the run game but the passing game too.
His 6-7, 270lb frame makes him a huge target in the passing game, and with his ball-catching skills being sharpened, Spann-Ford might just jump Schoonmaker in the depth chart.
He’s already off to a good start, and as training camp continues, we’ll be keeping an eye on this tight end position and see who will take advantage of their opportunities.
Because we bet Spann-Ford will.
