Spencer Jones Might Mash His Way Into the Bronx, or Out of Town originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Spencer Jones is making it harder and harder every day for the Yankees to leave him in Triple-A.
Today’s performance might have been the most impressive out of all the big days he has had during this recent dominant stretch. In his first three at bats Thursday, Jones slugged three straight home runs, making it 13 homers in 19 games at the Triple-A level.
Jones lumbers into the batter’s box standing 6 feet 7 inches; the size and home runs almost demand immediate Aaron Judge comparisons.
Playing and looking like an MVP should earn you a ticket to The Show, but is that the Yankees’ plan?
Their 4th highest-ranked overall prospect, Jones’ play certainly has to have intrigued more teams than just the Yankees. They already have a massive home run-hitting outfielder, would they really need another?
Jones has been destroying almost everything he has seen this year, but he had the second-most strikeouts in all of the minor leagues last season. Despite the success he has found this year, he has still struck out almost 1½ times per game after almost 70 contests.
A huge frame and long swing can have some pitchers salivating. We have seen glimpses of that with Judge, just less so over the last couple of MVP-caliber seasons.
What would the Yankees need to see to be convinced this is not a random hot streak? Or that he can hit enough out for the strikeouts he will rack up?
The answer cannot be found in such a short sample. By the time Jones will have been in Triple-A long enough, he might have already been shipped out of town. A red-hot, high-potential prospect could net the Yankees a key cog of a championship run.
Will Jones have enough time to prove himself a possible contributor this year? Or could he be playing for another franchise before July ends? Anything is possible due to the heater that he has been unleashing.
