YES Network: Yankees not excited by third base market as deadline nears originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The New York Yankees are shopping for a third baseman ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline, but so far, none of the rumored targets are generating much excitement inside the front office.
According to YES Network’s Jack Curry, the Yankees are doing their homework—but not loving the results.
“The vibe I’m getting from the Yankees is they do not have a lot of exuberance for some of the names that have been attached to them,” Curry said, citing Eugenio Suárez, Ke’Bryan Hayes, and Ryan McMahon. “They are a very detail-oriented organization when they make these kinds of decisions.”
For Yankees fans hoping for a blockbuster move at third base, this is a red flag. Curry is well-connected, and the data backs up his read.
Suárez offers power, 311 career home runs, but poor defense. That’s a tough fit for a team built around ground-ball pitchers and defensive efficiency. His .249 average and below-average glove don’t outweigh the bat if the Yankees can’t trust him in the field.
Hayes is a Gold Glove-caliber defender, but the bat hasn’t followed. He’s slashing .246/.297/.305 with a .603 OPS in 2025. Curry noted the long-term contract only adds to the hesitation.
McMahon brings versatility and past production, but he’s struggled outside Coors Field and is owed $16 million annually in 2026 and 2027. Solid glove, inconsistent bat, escalating cost.
Curry said Brian Cashman entered deadline week with a long list—starting pitching, bullpen help, and third base. But when it comes to third base, the list may be getting shorter.
None of these trade targets seem to match what the Yankees need. Not at the plate. Not in the field. Not at this price.
The hunt continues.
