George Pickens Scouts Cowboys' Offense In Oxnard: 'No Choice But To Be Great!'

George Pickens Scouts Cowboys’ Offense In Oxnard: ‘No Choice But To Be Great!’ originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

New Dallas Cowboys receiver George Pickens got acclimated to his new surroundings at OTAs and minicamp, but now the real stuff starts in Oxnard.

And no “princesses” are allowed, apparently.

With the Cowboys getting down to business in the California sun, it was Pickens’ first day under a Brian Schottenheimer regime, and things got going quickly as the connection with Dak Prescott was already on show.

And as far as what George thought of the first day of training camp?

“I think it was a great day,” Pickens said. “Honestly, just guys working, first day, so us getting our legs back under us. It’s a great day of work.”

Good quote. Want a better one?

After the workout, Pickens was asked whether he has a “split personality.” … one persona on the field and another off of it.

“Yeah, I definitely don’t want to go on the field and try to be a princess or anything,” he said. “I’m definitely going to try to play football.

So, Day 1 is in the books, and it gave us a little insight into how Pickens thinks … and how the offense under Schotty will operate, and one of the biggest things we noticed was the number of shifts and pre-snap motions used, plus KaVontae Turpin took a couple of handoffs too.

Granted, we don’t take too much stock into practices without the pads on, but the early signs have been good as the team gets their feet underneath them.

Pickens has liked what he’s seen from the offense, and when asked about what it could become, there’s only one option.

“I think it could be great,” said Pickens, who after his controversial time with the Steelers was Dallas’ big trade get of the offseason. “Today is the first day, but long as we keep working and the camaraderie, I feel like it’s no choice but to be great.”

The weapons are there with Pickens, CeeDee Lamb, Dak Prescott, Turpin, Jake Ferguson and what should be an improved run game for this offense to be better than last season.

But it is one practice — without pads, so while things have gotten off to a positive start, despite a number of balls hitting the ground, we will keep our judgments for when the real stuff starts…

And when no “princesses” are allowed.
