Commanders sign young defender to extension

The Washington Commanders signed one of their former draft picks to a contract extension on Thursday. No, it wasn’t wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who remains a holdout. Washington inked fourth-year safety Percy Butler to a one-year extension, via Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.

A fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Butler played collegiately at Louisiana. He played in all 17 games for the Commanders last season, making five starts and finishing with 47 tackles, including two for loss. Butler appeared in 15 games in each of his first two seasons and made 13 starts at safety in 2023.

Butler is known for his terrific play on special teams. That continued last season, but Washington’s new coaching staff really liked Butler at safety. While Quan Martin and Jeremy Chinn were the Commanders’ starting safeties last season, Butler received plenty of playing time on defense. Chinn is gone, having departed in free agency, but Washington signed veteran Will Harris to replace him. When the Commanders used three safeties last season, it was Butler who was on the field.

Whether Washington has plans for Butler at safety or not, this regime clearly considers him a core Commander.
