Following a few days of negotiations, former Longhorns star Max Belyue has signed his first MLB deal. The Aledo High School product was the Rockies’ supplemental second-round pick and was taken No. 74 overall. He received the full slot bonus for the selection, which was $1.1 million, according to MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis. His focus will now be on becoming one of the Rockies’ next great hitters.
During his time as Longhorn, Belyeu was one of their most productive hitters. In 106 games, the Texas native posted a .318 batting average while driving in 84 runs. He also showed some power with 52 extra base hits, including 27 home runs. While he was limited due to injuries this past season, Belyeu was a force at the plate when healthy.

Due to his performance in the batter’s box, the former Longhorn outfielder drew a lot of interest leading up to the draft. That is why the Rockies made adding him a priority. If he can reach his potential with Colorado, he has the potential to be an anchor in the middle of the order.
On draft night, the selection of Belyeu came as no surprise to many. Colorado has been connected to him since the 2024 campaign, which was the best season of his college career. The Rockies have also been able to learn more about Belyeu through former Rockies star Troy Tulowitzki, who is on the Longhorns coaching staff.

Although the Rockies have struggled over the last few years, they have consistently done reasonably well in developing hitters. That list includes Charlie Blackmon, Nolan Arenado, and Ryan McMahon. They currently own a 25-76 record and will again be picking in the top five next year.
While Colorado needs significant changes to be competitive, they hope that in the near future, Belyeu can be part of the solution. He showed at Texas that he can change the game with one swing, which is something the Rockies offense needs more of.
