The Jacksonville Jaguars’ rookies and veterans have now both arrived for training camp, and the team’s first practice will take place on July 23rd.
So with training camp essentially here, we are taking a position-by-position look at the Jaguars‘ roster, specifically examining the one big question that faces each unit.

Who starts at safety for the Jaguars next to Eric Murray?
We know that Eric Murray will be starting at safety for the Jaguars come Week 1, but who will primarily be lining up next to him?
Competing for that playing time are Darnell Savage, Caleb Ransaw, Andrew Wingard, and Antonio Johnson. The Jaguars also have rookie Rayuan Lane, who could help on special teams right away, and Daniel Thomas, who has been a core teams contributor for the Jaguars.
“Those guys are all real positive with each other in the room,” Anthony Campanile said during minicamp. “If they’re in there, they are coaching each other up. Out on the field they’re coaching each other up.
“Competition is a great thing. That’s a great problem to have, and our guys are going about that the right way, trying to help each other through it, but they are competing every day.”
Perhaps when it comes to determining who will start next to Murray, we can look at how the safety position operated last season in Green Bay, where Campanile was the linebackers coach. In that defense, interchangeability at the safety position, meaning having the versatility to play deep, in the box, and even at the nickel if needed, was important.
So, as we look at the Jaguars’ current safety competition, the player who can best fill a variety of roles in Campanile’s malleable defensive system, where multiplicity and varying looks are crucial, may have the upper hand.
“We got some good guys back there, some smart guys back there,” Campanile added. “Like you said, Dewey, Sav. Having Sav back is awesome too because he’s a sharp dude and has a bunch of ability.
“I think Caleb has done a really good job. I think he was coached really well in college, also because he’s a sharp guy. He’s got clean feet. He moves really, really well. A good athlete, and he’s doing extra every day, too. Just getting caught up, obviously coming in after those guys, but he’s doing a good job for us.”
Bonus question: How many safeties make the 53-man roster?
Along with Murray, I mentioned seven different safeties on the Jaguars’ current roster above. However, they aren’t going to have the room to keep that many. Maybe the go heavy and keep six, but even so, someone will have to be released. One to two players will be cut come roster cutdowns.
