Packers rookie Savion Williams cleared for training camp after offseason shoulder surgery

Green Bay Packers rookie wide receiver Savion Williams passed his pre-training camp physical and avoided going on an injury list to start his first NFL training camp.

According to reporting from Bill Huber of SI.com, Williams is “ready to roll” and cleared for training camp after recovering from offseason surgery to fix an injured labrum in his shoulder.

Williams was injured in TCU’s regular season finale in December and missed the team’s bowl game. He took plenty of punishment during his final season, catching 60 passes and carrying the football 51 times — often as a Wildcat quarterback — while taking on a featured role for TCU’s offense.

Williams, a third-round pick of the Packers, wore a red no-contact uniform throughout the offseason workout program, limiting his participation. He also didn’t participate at the Senior Bowl while recovering from the surgery and was limited to running the 40-yard dash during pre-draft testing.

With clearance to practice, Williams will avoid missing the important on-field work during the early portions of training camp and won’t face the mental and physical hurdle of lost reps to start his professional career. Expect to see the Packers to cross-train Williams as a vertical deep threat, gadget weapon and possibly even as a returner during his rookie season. He showcased the ability to do all three as a college player and could contribute to all three areas as a first-year player for Matt LaFleur.

Not everyone passed their physicals to open camp. The Packers placed eight players on injury lists, including three draft picks — fifth-round pick Collin Oliver and seventh-round picks Micah Robinson and John Williams. As expected, receiver Christian Watson is on the physically unable to perform list after needing surgery to fix a torn ACL.

The Packers open training camp with a practice on Wednesday, July 23.
