The Los Angeles Lakers lost their first game of the Las Vegas summer league on Thursday by two points to Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks after building a double-digit lead in the third quarter. On Saturday, they took the court again in Sin City and took on the New Orleans Pelicans.
They once again established a sizable lead, but this time, they held onto it. Los Angeles gave up the first nine points of the game, but it took a 15-13 lead with just under four minutes left in the first quarter and never really looked back on its way to a 94-81 victory.
Dalton Knecht didn’t play, as he was held out so he could rest. He suffered what was called a calf cramp late in Thursday’s game, but the decision to hold him out of Saturday’s contest reportedly had nothing to do with that calf ailment.
While L.A. shot just 40.5% from the field, it had 27 assists on 34 made field goals. It held the Pelicans to 33.8% shooting and played with good pace, which allowed it to finish with a 27-17 advantage in fast-break points.
Cole Swider led the Lakers in scoring with 21 points on 8-of-17 overall shooting and 4-of-9 from 3-point range, to go along with 10 rebounds. Forward Darius Bazley was impressive all around, especially on the defensive end, where he came up with five blocks and two steals. He also contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds and showed great energy once again, although he went only 4-of-12 from the free throw line.
Center Christian Koloko scored 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds and rejected three shots. Bronny James registered 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and added three assists, two steals, one block and one rebound.
