Golden State Warriors Insider expects Kuminga to re-sign with franchise

The Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga are yet to reach an agreement regarding a potential new contract. The explosive forward is a restricted free agent. Multiple teams around the NBA have been rumored to hold an interest in acquiring Kuminga via sign-and-trade; however, to this point, no trade has materialized. To make matters worse for Kuminga, there doesn’t appear to be any options for him in the free agency market. Most teams around the league are dealing with salary cap issues.

As such, Anthony Slater of The Athletic believes the most logical course of action is for Kuminga to re-sign with the Warriors, and the franchise seek a potential trade closer to the dealine. Slater went into detail regarding his thoughts on Kuminga’s situation during a recent apprarance on “Sactown Sports 1440.”

“I’m not sure he’s going to be able to muscle his way to a point where he gets the dollar amount that he wants, while also the Warriors get the trade package they want,” Slater said. “…I just think all of the market dynamics at play will lead him back to the Warriors at a compromise contract, traded come December 15th, when they can trade the full value of that contract.”

Keeping Kuminga around isn’t a bad outcome for the Warriors. He’s proven that he can be an impactful member of the rotation when given the opportunity. However, it’s clear that a consistently large role isn’t going to be available for him in the Bay Area. Therefore, the Warriors would be wise to find him a new home, assuming the trade package is a desirable one.

Unfortunately for Kuminga, he may need to remain patient in order to secure his exit from the Bay Area. Sooner or later, a team will piece together a trade package that interests the front office, and Kuminga will be heading to a new situation. Until then, he must remain focused on improving his game and making a positive impact when called upon; at least then, he will continue to increase his value around the NBA.
