Rockets veteran Fred VanVleet elected new NBPA president, will replace CJ McCollum

The National Basketball Players Association has found its next president.

Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet was elected the NBPA’s president on Saturday afternoon, the organization announced. He was voted in during the board of player representatives meeting on Saturday, and will now begin his four-year term as its leader.

VanVleet will replace CJ McCollum, whose term as the NBPA president expired. McCollum will now transition into an advisory role, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. McCollum led the group for four years, and had previously worked as an executive vice president.

VanVleet entered the league in 2016 out of Wichita State. After spending time with Raptors 905 and leading them to a G League championship in 2017, he quickly played his way into a key role with the Toronto Raptors. He spent his first seven seasons in the league with the franchise and helped them win their first and only championship in 2019.

VanVleet, who set the record for the most lucrative contract ever signed by an undrafted player, has spent the last two seasons with the Houston Rockets. He signed a two-year, $50 million deal to remain with the franchise last month, too. The 31-year-old averaged 14.1 points, 5.6 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game while helping the franchise claim the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference playoffs.
