The success of the Steelers secondary weighs heavily on the shoulders of Pittsburgh’s newest DB — All-Pro Jalen Ramsey. Despite excitement over his Steel City arrival being at an all-time high, one former NFL GM doesn’t buy the Ramsey-at-slot-CB hype.
Doug Whaley, who served as the Bills GM from 2013 to 2017, shared with 93.7 The Fan why Ramsey playing slot cornerback might not work out well for Pittsburgh — providing offenses with a blueprint for how he’d attack the Steelers secondary in 2025 (via Nick Farabaugh):
“This is where I struggle with guys like him, Jalen Ramsey, because he’s tall,” Whaley said. “Guys that are quick, and especially in that slot, they’re gonna be moving, and have a two-way go against a guy whose game is predicated on length. They have long, lengthy guys that need to press and get their hands on you. As an offensive coordinator, I’m going even 10 personnel and having two slot guys. That’s how I would attack the Steelers now.”
Several reports from insiders have indicated that the Steelers plan to utilize CBs Ramsey, Darius Slay, and Joey Porter Jr. on the field together more often than not — emphasizing that Ramsey’s versatility to play outside, slot cornerback, and safety is the key.
Ramsey is no stranger to playing in the slot, having done so with both the Rams and the Dolphins — but one could argue that utilizing him all over the secondary, rather than a full-time switch to slot CB or safety, is the recipe for success in 2025.
