Surprise West Team Linked to Damian Lillard in Free Agency: Report

Surprise West Team Linked to Damian Lillard in Free Agency: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

While many of the top free agents are already off the board after either re-signing with their current squad or moving to a new team, there are still many solid players left in free agency.

Among them is former Portland Trail Blazers and Milwaukee Bucks star point guard Damian Lillard.

Of course, the Bucks made the shocking decision to waive Lillard earlier this summer so that they could sign Myles Turner in free agency, a move that surprised the entire NBA world.

Lillard is set to miss most, or all, of next season after suffering a torn Achilles in the first round of the playoffs last season but he is still one of the top remaining players on the free agent market.

There have been many teams linked to Lillard thus far, including the Trail Blazers, but another surprise Western Conference contender has emerged as a potential landing spot for the star guard.

According to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel, the Golden State Warriors are among teams on top of Lillard’s list.

This is a massive report by Siegel and one that is not a complete surprise since Lillard is from Oakland, but his fit next to Stephen Curry is a questionable one.

Despite this, a backcourt of Curry and Lillard would be one of the best offensive backcourts in the NBA once Lillard returns from injury.

The 34-year-old star is coming off a season in which he averaged 24.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, 7.1 assists and 1.02 steals per game while shooting 44.8% from the field and 37.6% from three.

By pairing Lillard next to Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green, the Warriors would create a new big four in Golden State that could eventually compete for a championship.

While that may be the case, the Warriors may avoid targeting Lillard due to his injury and it also depends on how much they would have to pay him on whether they would consider signing him this offseason.
