49ers WR still awaiting word on suspension after 'no contest' plea to DUI charge

The San Francisco 49ers are still awaiting word on whether veteran wide receiver Demarcus Robinson will be suspended.

Robinson was arrested last season for a DUI after he was pulled over by California Highway Patrol for doing more than 100 miles per hour in Southern California. He pleaded ‘no contest’ to a misdemeanor DUI charge according to ESPN. Two other charges were dropped.

Robinson’s plea and sentencing took place Tuesday in Los Angeles. He also was ordered to pay a $390 fine and to complete court-mandated programs, including a three-month alcohol education program, the L.A. City Attorney’s office told ESPN.

“Mr. Robinson has taken this process extremely seriously by already completing most of the terms of his probation. We expect that his probation will terminate early at the 18-month mark after which his case will be expunged,” Robinson’s attorney, Jacqueline Sparagna, told TMZ Sports.

Sparagna told The Orange County Register that two other charges (driving with a BAC of 0.08 or higher and driving without a valid license) were dismissed.

It’s still unclear whether Robinson will be suspended for last year’s arrest. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco in early May reported the NFL was making a determination on whether the 30-year-old will be suspended for three games. The closer it gets to training camp the harder it is to envision the league forcing Robinson out of three weeks of action.

The 49ers would prefer to have Robinson all year since he appears to be a much-needed stabilizing veteran presence in a wide receiver room that’s full of question marks. If he does miss time, the club may have to turn to young players like Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins. They could also look to a veteran like Isaiah Hodgins or Russell Gage. Both players are on the 90-man roster and not expected to make the 53-man group at final cuts. However, the team may keep one or both around as veteran practice squad depth.

Robinson has played in 147 games across nine NFL seasons. He spent six years with the Kansas City Chiefs, one with the Baltimore Ravens and two with the Los Angeles Rams. Robinson has 250 career receptions, 3,013 yards and 27 touchdown catches.

The 49ers are scheduled to open training camp on July 24.
