Liberty Star Breanna Stewart Enjoys Down Time Ahead of WNBA All-Star Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
While team tries to get back into winning form, Stewart catches her breath a little bit.
Breanna Stewart is one of those players that makes the New York Liberty run. She’s a pro’s pro who proves all the time that she’s truly made for the “bright lights, big city” mentality in New York. Still, even someone of Stewart’s caliber needs down time.
That’s what she has been getting recently while also providing a lift to the Liberty. New York started off red hot in this WNBA season, going 9-0. In the Liberty’s last 10 games, though, it has gone 4-6.
The team plays a number of back-to-backs when the regular season starts up again after the All-Star break. New York is in the middle of a four-day break between their Tuesday victory over the Las Vegas Aces and a Sunday matchup with the Atlanta Dream.
Breanna Stewart embraces break at this time from WNBA action
“I don’t think we have another break like this for the rest of the season,” Stewart said in an interview with the New York Post. “I think our stretch is pretty wild — end of July into August. But when you have these moments, you have to really take advantage of them and really rest your body.

“A lot of the team was in today [Thursday at Barclays Center] doing some individual stuff, getting what you need. People are motivated to be better and that’s the good part.”
Injuries and missed players have plagued the Liberty some this season. Jonquel Jones is out of action and Leonie Fiebich missed seven games to compete in the EuroBasket for Germany and returned in early July. Isabelle Harrison and Natasha Cloud also were out of Tuesday’s game with injuries, too.
Despite being without some key players, Stewart sees a path developing for the Liberty to become back-to-back WNBA champions.
“What we are paying attention to [during this break] is just defense, making sure we are all on the same page,” Stewart said. “If we’re going to have different lineups based on who’s available, just building that chemistry in practice knowing that everything has to be sharp because we’re limited [in] roster size.”
Look for the Liberty to lace up their sneakers and start piling up more victories under Stewart’s leadership.
