Former Florida Gators Ace Has Tossed 18-Straight Scoreless Innings originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Florida Gators have a long history of producing star talent to Major League Baseball. Most of this impressive resume has been accumulated since Kevin O’Sullivan took over as head coach in 2008.
During his tenure, O’Sullivan has had 110 players selected in the MLB Draft, with 34 of them advancing to the major league level. One right-handed pitcher, who flourished in his time with the Gators under O’Sullivan, is making waves in the minors, hoping to become No. 35.
Brandon Sproat graduated from Florida in 2023 after four years in Gainesville. He was selected No. 56 overall by the New York Mets in the 2023 MLB Draft and has been lighting up opposing hitters in Triple-A recently.
Sproat has been on a tear over his last three starts for the Syracuse Mets, posting 18 scoreless innings while allowing just seven hits. This incredible stretch culminated on Thursday, as he tossed a season-high seven innings, giving up only three hits and one walk against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.
The flamethrower made 56 appearances with 37 starts in his time with the Gators. He pitched to the tune of a 4.27 career ERA while averaging 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings. In his senior year, Sproat earned a Second Team All-SEC selection.
After rising from Class A to Triple-A in 2024, the 6-foot-3 righty is ranked as the Mets’ No. 5 prospect in MLB Pipeline’s rankings. He has totaled 80 innings with Syracuse this season in 18 starts, posting a 4.61 ERA. Although his season-long numbers aren’t dazzling, his recent form is something to marvel at.
With impressive performances over the past two weeks, Sproat has quickly become the talk of Florida and New York fans alike. While his scoreless-innings streak may not last forever, it is likely Sproat will get his call-up to the show sooner rather than later.
