Earlier this month, 29-year-old D’Angelo Russell signed a two-year, $13 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks. With the move, he reunites with his former Los Angeles Lakers teammate, Anthony Davis.

Russell, who is heading into his 11th NBA season, spent one full season and parts of two others with the Lakers before finishing the 2024-25 campaign with the Brooklyn Nets. Last season, he averaged 12.4 points with the Lakers and 12.9 with the Nets.

Over his career, Russell has averaged 17.3 points per game and made one All-Star appearance.

Earlier this week, a video surfaced on social media showing Russell on a video call with Davis, who’s also about to begin his first full season in Dallas. Russell had some candid words for his new teammate as they discussed doing “something special” in their new team. The candid conversation also elicited a warm smile from the 32-year-old Forward-Center.

When Russell and Davis played a full season together alongside LeBron James, Russell averaged 18.0 points and 6.3 assists per game. During the 2023-24 season, he appeared in 76 games and started 69 of them.

Davis, who joined the Lakers in 2019, helped lead them to an NBA title in 2020. He’s a 10-time All-Star and was named All-Star Game MVP in 2017.

Davis was part of the Luka Doncic trade that sent him to the Lakers. The February 2025 trade is regarded as one of the most surprising trades in the history of American sports.

Russell and Davis will also be joined in the revamped Dallas squad by the 2025 NBA Draft top pick, former Duke Blue Devils star Cooper Flagg. The Mavericks finished as the 10th seed in the West a season ago. They went 39-43, but lost in the second play-in game to the Memphis Grizzlies, which ended their season.
