PSU Athletics upgrading facilities

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Chip Cummings Field, home of the Plattsburgh State Cardinal Baseball team, is set to receive a major facelift. The Cardinals’ home field will transition from grass to a state-of-the-art, infield and outfield artificial turf, with a project slated to begin this spring and be completed during the summer of 2026.

“We take great pride in our baseball program, and it continues to be one of our largest and successful athletic programs,” Plattsburgh State Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Mike Howard said. “This project will certainly enhance our ability to practice and compete throughout the course of the season, which, in turn, will allow us to continue to attract high level baseball players to Cardinal Country.”

The Cardinals’ Field House Athletic Complex is also undergoing a number of other facility upgrades this summer. The Rugar Woods Cross Country Course, which will play host to the 2025 SUNYAC Championships, is currently undergoing significant renovations to provide the necessary width and surface to host the championships.

The press boxes at both Cardinal Park, the home of Plattsburgh State Softball, and Chip Cummings Field are being renovated to include more space and new technology. The softball press box will be a complete rebuild to also include a new backstop system.

Significant improvements are also being made inside the Field House this summer, as a new LED lighting system was recently installed in the Stafford Ice Arena, the ground level floors were replaced with a rubber flooring system and a number of locker rooms were renovated. A number of branding projects are also underway at both the Field House and Memorial Hall facilities.

“The goal of all of our Cardinal athletic teams continues to be to compete at the highest levels of SUNYAC and NCAA play,” Howard said. “Enhancements like these as well as future projects we are working on to provide significant upgrades to all of our other outdoor facilities are critical to that success.”
