Sixers provide latest injury update on prized rookie VJ Edgecombe

The injury bug seems to have followed the Philadelphia 76ers to the summer league. After a miserable 24-58 season in 2024-25 due to injuries decimating the roster, the Sixers landed the No. 3 pick in the draft and selected Baylor star VJ Edgecombe.

After a fantastic start to his summer league–he had 28 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks on July 5–Edgecombe was initially diagnosed with a thumb contusion. He missed Philadelphia’s final two summer league games in Salt Lake City.

As the Sixers transition to the Las Vegas summer league, they announced that Edgecombe saw a doctor and has been diagnosed with a thumb sprain. He will miss Thursday’s contest against the San Antonio Spurs and will be re-evaluated on Saturday.

As the Sixers move forward in the summer league, it would be disappointing to not see Edgecombe get some more games under his belt, but Philadelphia should save its prized rookie for the games that really count. The Sixers should absolutely take the safe route with him and make sure he gets the proper time to recover.
